Even though she might not have wanted it, renegade sports blog Deadspin reported that Sterger had been sexually approached by Brett Favre when both were involved with the New York Jets. Sterger confirmed that she received inappropriate text messages and voicemails from someone she believed to be Favre, but she did not provide the website with copies of the obscene texts. Deadspin claims to have purchased the texts from a third party.

Simmons, “The Sports Guy” writes a popular column for ESPN.com’s page 2. With more than 1.25 million Twitter followers, Simmons had a audience that would not ignore even with the slightest hint of a juicy trade rumor. And prior to the New England Patriots’ trade of Randy Moss to the Minnesota Vikings, Simmons claims to have accidentally Tweeted the message “moss Vikings” to his followers.

Simmons says that his message was supposed to be a private communication with ESPN reporter Adam Schefter. Simmons quickly took the message down from his public Twitter, but once a message gets out online there is no taking it back. Simmons said that his information about the pending trade came from a well placed Vikings source. ESPN editorial policy would not allow Simmons to report a single anonymous source story without further verification.

Rather than letting the rumor fester, Simmons sent out a message that confirmed there were rumors about a deal that would send Moss to his original team, the Vikings. Soon other news organizations were reporting on the deal, and the momentum seemed to be pushing Moss to Minneapolis. A deal later emerged that sent Moss out of New England, and fans of both teams were not surprised.

Even though Twitter has yet to have society altering effects, the level of rapid access has changed the way news is reported. Press releases and breaking news have usually already been reported by someone close to a story.

Evil computers have become a popular and repeated motif in science fiction writings and movies. While few can top HAL from Arthur C. Clark’s 2001: A Space Odyssey several of these creation have become an important part of popular culture.

The evil cyborg in the Terminator series helped to launch the acting career of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The quiet nature of the Terminator, who let his actions do the talking seemed to fit the skill level of the Austria born body builder turned actor. His imposing physique nicely matched the thoughtless nature of a computer programmed killing machine. While Schwarzenegger helped to popularize the movie, the concept has shocked and entertained people for decades.

The Terminator was the creation of an evil computer system that became aware of its own existence and turned on its human creators. Skynet was created as a global defense system for the American military. Meant to eliminate human error, the machine’s artificial intelligence was given command over the nuclear arsenal of the American military.

The results were predictable if not nearly impossible to rationally explain. Somehow Skynet gained self-awareness and decided to eliminate all human life. Part of this included creating time travel to kill the leader of human resistance forces after Skynet ordered a nuclear strike on the entire population.

While time travel is always difficult to explain the Terminator series went past the unusual time travel contradictions by stating that the Skynet system was created by scientists who discovered the technology of a destroyed Terminator sent back to the past. In another example of the chicken or egg question, how could Skynet be its own grandfather?

The Terminator series might not have taken the science behind it that seriously, but the question of whether or not computers would be the undoing of man had been brought to mainstream American movies.

Is a computer that can think a sentient being? If mankind were able to create robots or cyborgs that had feelings would man have the responsibility to treat the creations as life? The questions seem to complex to properly answer, but that does not mean that science fiction writers have not attempted to try.

Harrison Ford’s portrayal of Han Solo might have earned him the most science fiction fans, but for science fiction purists who prefer intellectual debate rather than space explosions his play as a police officer in Blade Runner is his defining role.

Blade Runner attempts to answer the question of morality surround the creation of machine life. The movie does not offer definitive answers because the question are so complex that it might be past human comprehension to arrive at definitive answers. Playing god is more difficult that it seems at least in the world of Blade Runner. Ford’s character Rick Deckard plays the role of a blade runner – a police officer assigned to hunting down rogue cyborgs or replicants.

Replicants are distinguished by real people by testing their emotional reactions during an extensive interview test. Perhaps the most dramatic and interesting moment occurs as Deckard interviews a replicant that has been programmed to believe it is human. Implanted with human memories the replicant is nearly indistinguishable from humans and has even been implanted with human memories. During the interview the replicant suggests that Deckard take the test.

Perhaps the main character is a replicant, the movie never take a definitive stance. But does creating machines that feel moral or just? In 2010 Google was exposed as company that used tax loopholes to avoid paying American corporate taxes. By channeling their revenues through Ireland and the Cayman Islands Google was able to avoid paying billions in taxes. The area that Google might have most violated its self professed mantra is in the are of net neutrality. The internet has been a tier free superhighway of information, while the arrangement has worked for consumers, major corporations have cried foul. Laying down infrastructure for the public to access the internet should give companies the right to control content. While this argument might be seen as evil, Google seems to agree.

In the movie Knocked Up, Seth Rogen plays a character that seems unwilling to grow up despite the reality that he will soon be a father. He supports himself using his life savings and has only one career prospect. He and his friends want to launch a website that tells the time to the second when actresses perform nude scenes in movies. While the site never makes it off the ground in the movie, the idea has already been launched to great success.

The website Mr. Skin was launched in August of 1999 by Chicago area entrepreneur Jim McBride. You won’t find the initials BCE anywhere on Yahoo, G-Mail or Hotmail. It’s not on any version of Word either. BCC is. Unlike the imprints in rock that we find with bones of little cave men in B.C., BCC is purposely private. The little cave men don’t have that choice. Their remnants are shown all over the world now. Poor chaps.

When you intentionally use BCC, the point is to keep all your recipients from viewing the email addresses of the other recipients. Privacy. Cool stuff. There was, for a while, a way to see the addresses anyway by right clicking on the unopened E-mail on Hotmail and choose source code. It would show everything. Hotmail caught onto this recently when they rebuilt their mail site for the millionth time and removed this feature. Your privacy is now secure. Heh.

Computer networking is a system by which computers can communicate or speak to one another. Computers can, through the network, send and receive emails, instant messages, files, and other information.

The two main types of computer networking are the client to server connection and peer to peer communication. In the first instance, the client to server connection, the computer or server has the primary role as the server, where the web page data, spreadsheet files, data in the form of documents, videos and other resources are stored. All other computers in this client-server network are called clients and they receive data from the server. In the peer network, all computer have equal roles and no computer behaves as the centralized server. The client-server networking is the model most generally used.

The structure, layout or design of the client-server network is defined by its topology, like a bus, star, mesh, ring, hybrid or something else. The most common network topology is the star in which all network computers are linked with a centralized mechanism like a switch or hub. If the hub or switch fails to operate, then all the communication and connectivity among the computers will stop.

The simpler way to organize computer networking is the peer to peer system, in which two or more computers are directly connected with each other so that if there were five computers involved. With peer to peer networking, computer one would be hooked up with computer two, which would hooked up to computer three and so on. The major problem with this connection is that each computer is dependent on the other so that if computer four goes down then computer three would not be able to communicate with computer four or five and computer five would not be able to communicate with any of the other computers.

Personal Area Network-Usually referred to as a PAN, a personal area network is the network that exists between a person’s various devices, i.e., a personal computer linked to a printer, a Blackberry, a scanner, etc. An individual uses this network to transfer information from one device to another for data storage, emailing, printing, scanning and other tasks.

Wide Area Network-This type of network is used to cover large areas such as towns or cities. A WAN can extend far enough to even cover continents. A wide area network usual multiple media types to send data.

The Internet-the grand poo-bah of data transfer is really just a behemoth collection of networks from companies, governments, schools, individuals and other organizations. The Internet allows people to instantly access any of these networks.

Enterprise Private Network–An EPN is a network used by a business to link different properties together. An EPN allows a headquarters office, for example, to be networked to a company construction site, off-site payroll offices, and individuals.

Local Area Network–By far the most common network used, next to PAN. A local area network covers a small geographical area, like a home or group of computers, but can also cover a close-knit group of buildings. LANs are also used extensively for computer- and video-gaming, so that multiple gamers can play together from different locations.

Campus Network: Exactly what it sounds like. A campus network is a collection of local area networks which are linked together. These LANs can be from different buildings, academic departments, etc, and the campus network connects all the buildings.

With the network technology available, billions of people are able to work together towards a common goal from multiple locales. Businesses, as referenced, can pursue projects and confer together from different sites. Schools can store information that students can access through the LAN or campus network. Networks make progress possible and are a real blessing of technology.

Nope, that doesn’t mean rubbing elbows with publishers at the weekend mixer or working the floor during the corporate retreat. While similar in theory, technological networking works to connect devices, not people. Well, not their elbows anyway.

Networking is how a person can connect multiple electronic devices or computers to each other. A PAN, (personal area network) is the network that is created between a personal computer and the devices attached to it, such as an iPod, printer, external hard drive, or PDA. A network like this eases the hassle the user faces in the process of transferring data from one computer to another.

To create a network is pretty simple, and it is made even more so by the helpful and complete walk through that devices will give you to help get it done. Take a wireless printer, for example. All that needs to be done is to turn the printer on and wait for the computer to recognize the signal being sent by the printer. In the Devices and Printers window (under the Start Menu on Windows 7) there is an option to “adopt” the printer as one of the computer’s devices. The printer is now part of the personal area network. Personal area networks can be achieved with wires such as a FireWire, or more commonly, a USB cable. However, as the printer example shows, a wireless PAN works just fine too. Wireless personal area networks can use infrared signals to communicate, but they usually run off of BlueTooth technology. Networking allows people to share information from device to device, transferring data from a say, a desktop, to a Blackberry to take to work. Networking can also be used to communicate with others, almost like that weekend mixer. Computers from all over a certain geographic area can be linked together by a computer network. This network can be used to send work-related information between employees or communications to the company. The whole Internet is a just collection of thousands of networks that people can visit and be connected to.

While an increasing amount of people are pursuing degrees from college and universities, a growing number of them are doing so from home, with online classes offered by many schools. Online degrees are sought after for several reasons. One, they are cheaper than attending a university and actually going to class (think of professors’ salaries, housing costs, classroom/building maintenance costs that the student contributes to) and two, you can go to to class at two in the morning if you want. For folks who live busy lives, online classes are a godsend, where they can gain knowledge and earn credits on their time, instead of a university’s schedule. This allows them to keep their daytime job, look after their children, or attend another school at the same time. Many college-age kids supplement their day-time credits by taking additional credits online so they can finish school earlier.

With the improved technological capabilities of computers, accessing class information off a university’s network is a cinch, and a student can do their reading assignments, submit homework, and even take quizzes and tests over the Internet. Research and supplemental information, or research is right there online as well. Professors can share links from the assignment page, so a student can look it up right away instead of having to wait until later after class. Even Wal-Mart is getting into online schooling, and is offering work-related credits for their employees to take through a partner university.

There’s less communication between student and professor online, however,so online students need to be prepared to absorb 99% of their curriculum by reading. Also, it’s important to remember the deadline for the class. Universities give a lot of lee-way for online students, usually a year, but the due-date for class completion can creep up unsuspected sometimes.

The best part of school done over the Internet is the freedom that it offers a student. Personal motivation comes into play in a big way and the student can barrel though a class in three weeks if they want, or work on it a bit every day after work. The choice is up to them.

About once every two years you get a new phone. Okay, some of you are getting new ones every three months because you keep dropping the thing in the toilet or you just like to collect them. Either way, you have some astounding technology in your hands.

Occasionally you hear a cell phone that someone has set to sound like an old AT&T dial ringer: ding a-ling a-ling. That’s cool but it gets old. You thumb through the tones that come with the phone. Maybe there are a dozen. Some are outrageously irritating. The rest, well, they all sound so similar that you can’t remember one from the other after awhile. It’s like perfume testing at the department store. After awhile the olfactory senses give out. You have become ringtone dyslexic!

It’s always a good idea to listen or in the case of internet networking, watch. You can learn a lot about people if you simply watch behaviors for a while. Facebook is a great place to learn about people, see what interests them and understand what causes them to kick in and respond. There are as many reasons to be on Facebook now as there are people, but there tend to be some dynamics that are typically prevalent.

If you have “friended- a wide variety of folks, then the study gets interesting. Make sure you have some professionals. Mix it up with a set of young college students and if you have a child in high school, friend her but promise never to write on her”wall”! That would be the gravest of mistakes. The high school student may not mind you being there to read her life, maybe, but she definitely does not want you interacting in her conversations with other students!

Once set, get dinner, perhaps a glass of wine or a shot of good whisky, and put on some good music. Stay for the show. It is amazing what people will talk about with the entire world watching.

After you have watched and remained silent for a few days, you can cut in and add to your wall or make comments on other people’s walls. By this time you have noticed what they want to read. In general you will find this: people are mostly on Facebook to chit-chat, talk about political frustrations, ask if the homework assignment is due on Friday or otherwise spout off without much thought before the words enter the keyboard. Some are also there to organize social/political efforts or create artistic bonds.

People will respond to you if you are witty or bring up subjects of social/political controversy. Where will you flop? Philosophy and truths designed to “enlighten”. If you like typing to yourself, type wisdom. If you want interaction, turn off the brain and enter the empty void. People are there to vent, occasionally create, and have fun.

Popular television shows depict crime scene forensic workers as miraculous heroes who are able to turn a single hair discovered at a crime scene into a conviction. In Chicago justice for Marlaina "Niki" Reed did not occur until her dentist recognized a forensic computer generated image of her face. Reed had a tragic life. She was abandoned by her family and had become a ward of the state of Illinois. She was originally from the downstate town of Danville, which has been of the most economically depressed communities in the United States. Danville has made the news for its free falling home prices, and its surprisingly high crime rate for a city of its size.

Reed is another tale out tragedy out of Danville. Her body was discovered stuffed in a Casio keyboard box wrapped on the Northwest Side of Chicago’s Humbolt Park neighborhood in January 2007. It took awhile for police to identify the body as Reed’s, but once she was identified the case easily fell into place. Reed had met her killer, 46-year old William McIntosh in 2006. In December of 2006 McIntosh opened a DirectTv account using Reed’s Social Security number. Several days after police discovered Reed’s body McIntosh pawned a Casio keyboard, which was the same brand as the box her body was wrapped in.

The key pieces of evidence were discovered on the victim’s body. The name Evelyn was written in black marker on her leg. Evelyn was the name of McIntosh’s mother. While all of these details added up to a strong circumstantial case, the key piece of evidence was DNA discovered on denim used to bind Reed’s legs. The DNA matched McIntosh. The case took years to solve but science and computers caught a killer. Thanks to the technology like direct tv that help greatly in the investigations.

It’s easy to get a computer today. Almost anyone can afford one, and they’re available even in major chain retail stores. You don’t have to go to a computer or electronics store to get one or pay thousands of dollars to locate one that works properly and does what you need it to do. Because they’re so easy to get and there are so many different brands and models and options, it can be easy to get confused. Make sure they know that you’re about more than just selling them something. When they realize the products you have to sell have value and you’re trying to help others instead of just make a quick buck, they’ll be much more likely to buy from you. That can lead to a lot of sales, because they’ll tell others of your integrity and your helpful attitude – both of which can seem hard to come by in the business world today. It can take some time to get established with social networking, though, so don’t get discouraged. You can’t just set up an account with one of the major networking sites and expect everyone to come out of the woodwork to buy things from you. Patience will be necessary, along with tenacity and a true desire to help others with the product or service that you’re offering. When others see what you have to offer and the sincerity with which you’re providing it, they’ll become the start of the loyal customer base that you desire.
