Social Networking: Changing the Faces of the Unemployed : )

Looking for a job has never been easy and can be down-right depressing. Before the Internet and social networking, job hunting meant scanning the want ads and sending out resumes. Networking existed, but it meeting with an old buddy for coffee. That’s what it was like for many people laid off during the 2001 recession.

But unemployment in the age of Internet and social networking isn’t nearly as depressing or lonely. As the old adage goes, “Misery loves company.” Now, networking options abound for the out-of-work, both nationally and locally.

LinkedIn is great when you’re employed but it can be just as good when you are unemployed. Professionally speaking, it is a great resource for expanding your network beyond the two or three other people you know who do what you do. In addition to joining groups in your area of interest with like-minded people, these same people will let you know when there is a job out there for the taking.

LinkedIn offers another benefit when conducting a job search while logged into the site. When you search jobs, LinkedIn lets you know who in your network works at a specific company with a posting. If you expand your job search to SimplyHired while still logged in, the same service is provided for those jobs.

Twitter offers a more passive approach. With TweetMyJobs, you can receive automatic updates about available jobs in a certain field and even in a certain region. And you can receive it via Twitter or on your cell phone while having a latte and “networking” with your old buddy.

Being a fan of a company’s Facebook page or following it on Twitter also offers the added advantage of knowing when a new job opens up.

Local social networking has popped up around the country specifically for the unemployed. These groups such as the 405 Club in New York City not only provide job resources but also people to share your woes with.

Networking….Its older than you think!

Networking, this is really not something new it’s been going on for many decades (if not centuries). It is simply making connections with people. One central connection with many branches.
An example of networking is a building contractor; he has a “network” of sub-contractors that he deals with when he takes on a project such as masons, carpenters, electricians, etc. If a contractor relied on one person or company in one particular field of expertise he would be in a world of hurt if these people had another project to work on when he needed them. So, he builds a network of professionals so as to be able to accomplish his project in a timely manner. How many people have gone to the hospital? Yes, another network. You have doctors that have different specialties, nurses, technicians of different fields. Even our military is a network. Some protect by air, some by sea and some by land. All taking orders by the Secretary of Defense who gets orders from the President.
On a more personal level, most of us have more than one friend. Yes, another network. We rely on our friends for companionship, advice, and many other things. Each of us has our own network be it personal, professional or in some cases both. In some cases our networks intertwine with others by either having the same friends. Sometimes they intertwine because you’ve asked a friend for instance “do you know of a good mechanic?” Networks are everywhere and are going to keep growing. Enjoy your network for it may weave into a safety net for you. Any venue of life can have a network, you just have to keep your eyes and ear open to every opportunity. Thoughout the Centuries that networking has been around, it contiues to help people, places and in the end everyone could benefit from Networking.

There are several kinds of networking, such as Social networking. Social Network include Facebook, myspace, twitter and so on. Many people use these social networks as a way to stay in touch with family, friends and social event. Not everyone uses facebook, but it has its pros and cons. Pros are that you can stay in touch with friends and family, you also can play game and join groups that suit your interest. Cons are that a lot of your personal information is exposed, people can become addicted to social networking. Statistics from www.graphicsms.com show that 47% of online adult use social networking and 73% of teens and young adults are members of at least one social network. also from the same website the average user spend more than 55 minutes per day on a social networking site and that more than 1.5 million local businesses have an active facebook page.Right now Facebook and twitter are the most popular social network sites to date, myspace is used less because facebook is easier to use, better games, and you can chat easier on facebook.With Statistic from Lemieux and Associates Facebook’s search function allows you to search within a variety of networks (i.e. university, employer, city, metropolitan area, high school) depending on which networks a person has become a member of. If a person is within your network due to geographical location, you may have access to certain content that other users don’t. They also have a variety of other tools that could be used against you, such as if you were being investigated and they wanted to track some of the things you have said all they would have to do is go to any of the Social Network that you visit they caould potentially find out some of the things they need to know.

The evolution of Networking…

Networking is not a new concept; it has gone on for centuries. It is simply making connections with people. If you think about it, even our family trees are a network of sorts, starting from great grandparents to a multitude of aunts, uncles and cousins. We have also used networking from friendships to business. It started off as a personal interaction. Let us say Joe had something he wanted to get rid of and he told William. William didn’t want nor need it but, he knew somebody else who was interested in the item and told this third person a network connection is now made. We all at one point or another have either built our own personal network or have become part of a network for somebody else. Just as we have evolved from horse and carriage to automobiles so has our networking. So, as evolution has it, networking has expanded into also an electronic avenue of connections. We use it to make connections with other people as well as devices such as computers and even the internet itself. Whether it is an internal network to run a business or at home playing on a social networking site such as Facebook or MySpace on the internet, we have made a connection with many simply with a click of a button. There is no more waiting for days, weeks or even months for a reply, it is instantaneous. That why it’s used by so many people on the earth, because it’s simply to use and anyone can do it. Actors and Actresses use this social media to network with their fans and vice versa. There is also networking on video game machines like playstation and Xbox when you use them there a millions of people that talk while you’re playing and that is a network also.

Choosing the best picture for your networking profile may not seem like a big deal. However, your face will be the first to greet your friends and contact list each day. Your picture is your image. Here are a few tips to help you choose the picture that places your best face forward.

Your profile photo can make a good first impression. The picture you place to represent you sets the tone to the type of person others will see you as. You don’t necessarily have to go out and spend a load of cash sitting for a professional photographer. Instead, consider a clear quality photograph that helps you project an approachable image. If you are taking a photo to represent you in a professional light, then perhaps a high quality headshot is the better option for you.

No matter which option you go with, a photo with a natural smile and eye contact makes others perceive you in a more genuine manner. Keep your fun and artistic looks for your photo album. Remember that first impressions are difficult to change. Smiling in your photo is more appealing than wearing that brooding frown. Facebook Networking

It’s always a good idea to listen or in the case of internet networking, watch. You can learn a lot about people if you simply watch behaviors for a while. Facebook is a great place to learn about people, see what interests them and understand what causes them to kick in and respond. There are as many reasons to be on Facebook now as there are people, but there tend to be some dynamics that are typically prevalent.

If you have “friended- a wide variety of folks, then the study gets interesting. Make sure you have some professionals. Mix it up with a set of young college students and if you have a child in high school, friend her but promise never to write on her”wall”! That would be the gravest of mistakes. The high school student may not mind you being there to read her life, maybe, but she definitely does not want you interacting in her conversations with other students!

Once set, get dinner, perhaps a glass of wine or a shot of good whisky, and put on some good music. Stay for the show. It is amazing what people will talk about with the entire world watching.

After you have watched and remained silent for a few days, you can cut in and add to your wall or make comments on other people’s walls. By this time you have noticed what they want to read. In general you will find this: people are mostly on Facebook to chit-chat, talk about political frustrations, ask if the homework assignment is due on Friday or otherwise spout off without much thought before the words enter the keyboard. Some are also there to organize social/political efforts or create artistic bonds.

People will respond to you if you are witty or bring up subjects of social/political controversy. Where will you flop? Philosophy and truths designed to “enlighten”. If you like typing to yourself, type wisdom. If you want interaction, turn off the brain and enter the empty void. People are there to vent, occasionally create, and have fun.
